"Wordharvest supports authors and encourages great writing."- Anne Hillerman and Jean Schaumberg

What is Wordharvest?

Founded by Anne Hillerman and Jean Schaumberg in 2002, WORDHARVEST is devoted to the art and craft of writing. From our headquarters in Santa Fe, New Mexico, we celebrate the legacy of iconic mystery author Tony Hillerman with two writing contests: the Tony Hillerman Prize for first mystery novel, and the Tony Hillerman Mystery Short Story Contest.

We also sponsor the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference—a three-day workshop offering how-to advice on writing techniques and the business of writing. Session topics range from publishing e-books to writing fiction and non-fiction. The Conference provides an intimate environment to get feedback and critiques about your writing, network with literary agents and editors, and find writing inspiration.

Tony Hillerman Writers Conference

Join us Nov. 6–8, 2014 at the Santa Fe Hilton in downtown Santa Fe, N.M.

2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the Tony Hillerman Writers Conference! We are delighted to celebrate author Tony Hillerman's enduring influence with a program that features a great mix of presenters who have joined us for past conferences and seasoned authors we are eager to work with. We are blessed to have met so many talented writers over the past decade, and thrilled that many of our attendees are now published! Their success is the frosting on our anniversary cake.

Here's preview of the party:
Thursday hands-on workshops feature "The Art of the Rewrite" (Susan Cummins Miller) and "Designing Compelling Stories: What Writers Can Learn from the Movies" (Sandi Ault). Following the workshops, we invite our attendees to join us for a Gala Opening Celebration featuring clips from movies based on the novels of Tony Hillerman followed by a discussion with the producer, director, a leading man, and Tony's daughter.

Fridays sessions, focused on the craft of writing, include "Writing a Series" (mystery writer Steve Havill), "Tricks from the Screen Trade" (award-winning screenwriter Melinda Snodgrass), and "To Outline or Not to Outline" (panel presentation with NYT best-selling mystery writer Anne Hillerman and others). That evening, please join us for our popular interactive session "Writing with the Stars."

Saturday sessions, focused on the business of writing, include a keynote conversation with internationally-known best-selling authors David Morrell and John Sandford. Other highlights: "Contracts and Copyrights for Writers" (author and law professor Sherri Burr), "The Writer’s Business Plan" (author and columnist Susan Guyette) and announcement of the next winner of the Tony Hillerman Prize for a first mystery.

Optional First Chapter Critiques and a chance for authors to promote their new books at the New Book/New Author breakfast are also on the agenda.
