What began as a tent city for health seekers was transformed into Sunmount Sanatorium by brothers Frank and Harry Mera in 1908. Patients would include a young engineer named John Gaw Meem, who got a jump start on his illustrious career while still a patient at Sunmount. This well preserved site is now the Catholic Retreat Center and Carmelite Monastery in Santa Fe.

This property is the site of the short-lived sanatorium established by three consumptive physicians. Home to a dude ranch from 1930 – 1932, footings and a sturdy barn still stand as reminiscences of a once glorious mansion-turned-hospital that opened to great expectations in 1905.

Built by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, NM’s first sanatorium was dedicated in 1897, and would provide services for decades. When the railroad boomtown of Las Vegas, NM declined in the 1920s, its TB industry declined as well. In 1921 St. Anthony’s became a general-purpose hospital. Patient rooms, a lovely sun porch, and a spacious chapel still exist.

This grand hotel with a view of the Las Vegas plaza has been carefully restored. While never a sanatorium, health seekers found affordable accommodations there and humorously established the One Lung Club. It was listed in the 1895 Las Vegas City Directory as follows: “One Lung Club. Has a large membership and constantly increasing. Object of club, individual improvement.”

Built by the AT&SF Railroad, the hotel got off to a roaring start in 1882. Extensively advertised as a paradise for people afflicted with lung diseases, the facilities extended to the nearby hot springs, bathhouses, and several smaller hotels. Twice destroyed by fire, the Montezuma was rebuilt each time, staying in business until 1903. It is now the Armand Hammer United World College of the American West. The  magnificent main building, the hot springs and the Old Stone Hotel still exist.
